BetaModerator: We're going to start with a question and answer session between myself and the Helix team.
BetaModerator: After that, we'll open it up to questions from you.
BetaModerator: Thank you all for joining us for today's formal chat session for AOL's newest software, codenamed Helix.
BetaModerator: Please hold your questions until the end of our interview session.
BetaModerator: Please briefly describe Helix for those who may not have had a chance to test it yet.
BetaProjMgr: Helix is an all-in-one application which ties email, instant messaging, and web browsing into an efficient, modern, and easy-to-use interface.
Ysuire: it's an all-in-one AOL software based on the ancient Copland interface
BetaProjMgr: Helix combines many classic AOL features, such as the toolbar, with Internet standard features like tabbed browsing.
SandersM: This is very slow. Is there some place we can offer suggestions that will actually be read?
BETAPhederico: Sanders we're currently having a formal chat.
GeorgeKnighton: What is the purpose of Helix? Why was it promulgated?
BetaAteb: All suggestions will be read and may be responded to in line, but we like to get an overview first as they may answer some questions.
SandersM: BETAP I understand that. But the chat is snaillike and many of us are at work. Is there a place to leave feedback for you?
BETAPhederico: absolutely Sanders....go to beta.aol.com, and use our forums or direct links to the appropriate test.
BETAPhederico: Thanks!
BetaProjMgr: we also worked on improving windows management
SandersM: Great. Thanks. Bye.

BetaModerator: What has been the most difficult part of this project to manage?
BetaProjMgr: Developing the features as the User Interface (UI) was still being defined.
BetaProjMgr: next question
BetaModerator: What technology was used to create Helix?
BetaProjMgr: Helix is built on AOL’s Open Client Platform (OCP) using an open-source UI rendering engine
BetaProjMgr: Boxely, that uses a combination of C++ and an XML-based scripting language.
BetaProjMgr: This has been the basis for many AOL products
BetaProjMgr: AOL Explorer, AIM, CCU, SSC, OpenRide
Smcguirenyc: Simple yet affordable!
BetaProjMgr: Helix has a modular architecture with a core
BetaGuestSpeaker: the architecture for Helix is modular with a parent container and toolbar and embedded apps (AIM, mail etc.)
SBSBJB: No to OpenRide
Schall051079: I’ve never had the chance to use OpenRide
JMcdon1007: It was the most exciting fresh product to date.
BetaGuestSpeaker: we were able to use AOL Explorer and AIM out of the box
BetaModerator: Please let our guests speak, we will open the floor to your questions and comments shortly
Smcguirenyc: Open Ride was so classy.
Smcguirenyc: Like buttah!

BetaModerator: What are some lessons that you have learned from the development of Helix?
BetaGuestSpeaker: we're still learning them
BetaGuestSpeaker: we need your help!
BetaModerator: What was the most fun feature to design?
Smcguirenyc: The title?
BetaGuestSpkr2: We had fun designing all the new innovations and twists on classic AOL. However, the most fun feature has to be App Map
BetaGuestSpkr2: We still enjoy playing with it.
BetaGuestSpkr2: A close second would be the minimized window thumbnails - try minimizing a window and check out the spiffy little feature
BetaModerator: What part of Helix do you believe to be the most innovative?
BetaGuestSpeaker: I think the way we've improved windows management
BetaGuestSpeaker: App Map, tabbed email, linking tasks to the toolbar

BetaModerator: Please choose one adjective to best describe Helix and tell us why you chose it.
BetaGuestSpeaker: I would choose "Evolved"
BetaGuestSpeaker: we chose the codename "Helix" because of its association with DNA and evolution
BetaGuestSpeaker: the design essentially evolved from 9.0, even though there are many new features and an updated look and feel
BetaGuestSpeaker: we worked to balance innovation with comfort and familiarity in this evolved design
Smcguirenyc: I think the questions are computer generated.
BetaGuestSpeaker: nope, we're actually typing
BetaProjMgr: no they are not computer generated
BetaModerator: What kind of features or improvements can we expect from Helix in the near future?
BetaGuestSpkr2: The chat functionality is not yet fully implemented - but we hope to add it soon
BetaModerator: Which features are you most excited about that is coming soon?
BetaProjMgr: qaps
SBSBJB: huh? lol
BetaProjMgr: (quick views off the toolbar)
BetaGuestSpkr2: the ability to sign on as "invisible"
Hugs1956: I like that one

BetaModerator: What part of Helix needs the most testing right now?
Hugs1956: the chat function
BetaGuestSpkr2: Mail! It's had the most changes - both UI and code, so it needs the most testing to find the remaining bugs.
Strickman214: Where can you change the background color?
BetaGuestQA: For the next beta we will need the sign on experience tested.

BetaModerator: Thank you very much! We'll now turn on the moderated function and turn the floor over to your questions and comments
BetaModerator: Please post your question ONCE, you will not be able to see it. We will answer them in the order they are posted
JFlynn280: I have suggested this for a number of years now – that the Favorites and the
Managed Mail folders be sortable without having to do it all manually.
JFlynn280: Any prospects of this happening in the near future?
BetaGuestSpeaker: JFlynn280: we're looking at it, we're not sure if that will be available in the final release however
Joez412: I agree w/the sorting suggestion --- I too have suggested for some time!
JTK456: I agree about the Favorites and managed mail sorting tweaks as good ideas, as well, I've often "lost" favorites waaaay down in the list as they used to be more easily moved/indexed/referenced on older

SBSBJB: will we eventually see a centralized area for all Settings?
TheGuev: Comment: This is a world better than 9.0 or Open Ride.
SGW7011: you mentioned helix having comfort and familiarity of 9.0, are those features coming?
Hugs1956: I can’t get the security features to let me download them
Joez412: I've not joined one of these sessions before, but I find
Helix the most exciting of the new incarnations --- close enough to X.x, but yet innovative --- love app map!
ApricotSP: I was just wondering, can I get some toolbar icon adjustments? The larger the better!
Velvettpie: I don’t like the mail settings

SGW7011: if not, why do you feel it necessary to change so much from the familiar format we know and love now?
BetaGuestSpeaker: SGW7011: re: familiarity and comfort, Helix has a toolbar and a layout similar to 9.0, and offers the option for you to view mail in new/old/sent or inbox style
BETAPhederico: We will address your questions in the order they are received.
Smcguirenyc: Sorting would help.
Calebmcdaniels: have any of you had problems installing and running AOL helix also is this replacing open ride
TheGuev: Question: Will a full range of settings (like 9.0) eventually be available?
SGW7011: perhaps you are seeing a different helix than I am?
GeorgeKnighton: What is the reason that Helix exists? Why are we not simply improving the client?
BetaGuestSpeaker: still on comfort and familiarity -- we're also offering 9.1
turnerd10: Is AOL helix like AOL open ride?
SGW7011: I have had much to say about the average AOL user, as opposed to the more tech savvy, and I think the average user would be scared of this
BetaModerator: Thanks, Sharon
Smcguirenyc: I think you need to keep the interface looking more AOL. Use the running man for instance.

ForumDesigner: The mail feature allowing other emails to be added is very valuable to me because I have several websites with many Emails. The only problems so far is new mail not updating with notification.
GeorgeKnighton: One of the big advantages of having AOL is the ability to store a lot of information on the server. Things like Favourites should be pulled off the server, not the computer on which Helix is installed
Calebmcdaniels: have any of you had problems installing the AOL helix on you computers?
turnerd10: I think AOL helix is just like AOL open ride and I think AOL helix should have a media player
TimDan2000: will saved mail ever be auto alphabetized as it is saved to folders???
Velvettpie: will we have the option to click on our email and have choices like read delete ignore
turnerd10: is AOL helix from AOL open ride
GeorgeKnighton: There needs to be functionality for switching between windows, like Alt-Tab or something.
GeorgeKnighton: Is there any chance at all that we will see internal browser code based on Mozilla instead of MSIE? The code is so much easier to manipulate.
JTK456: I liked the default settings to automatically save mail to
AOL or my PC, as well, though if saved to one's PC, it sure is a pain to go through all that tools/organize/spool file BS if needed ...
GeorgeKnighton: Is there any chance of anti-advertising plugins becoming available for the browser? This is a great and well known weakness of all AOL browsers.
JFlynn280: I have maxed out my favorites - are there any prospects of expanding the number of favorites?

GeorgeKnighton: Will keywords be implemented soon? Will FTP and similar items be available in Helix soon?
TimDan2000: AOL has been in the Stone Age when it comes to stored mail... will that ever be improved?
SBSBJB: will we eventually see a centralized area for all Settings?
BetaGuestSpkr2: Great idea! We're going to work on a way to easily get to all your settings

Velvettpie: also will helix be like ie7 no time outs this annoys more with AOL I click on a webpage and it can’t find I thank this is more with AOL servers
BedaSeanB: any chance we can get out alerts back, lol?
SBSBJB: TY
BetaProjMgr: it is coming in a beta soon
turnerd10: is there going to be a media player?
SGW7011: We are looking at two clients in testing..the 9.1, which is the classic and familiar, and the helix that is newer and techier...is AOL planning then on offering a software option based on the desire?
Ysuire: I am French and I test Helix ... but at the contrary of other tests, this one is reserved to a QWERTY keyboard ... will it be corrected?
BetaGuestQA: As part of our localized process we will support this.
BetaAteb: Which will appear sometime after the initial US release (GM).
Ysuire: ok thank you very much

SBSBJB: I would like to see the Mail buttons more uniform, either on the top or bottom, not both
FBayliff: is this program like the old AOL communicator and will one be able to import AOL fav.?
TimDan2000: will saved mail ever be auto alphabetized as it is saved to folders???
ApricotSP: My icons (Mail, AIM, Web) are too small for me to see... can I expect the icons to be capable of resizing?
BetaGuestSpeaker: TimDan2000: you can sort the mail in any folder
TaintedPrince: Is AOL Chat going to be deployed within Helix with
userplane-like features
Dglacierskier: Will Helix eventually replace 9.1 or complement it?
Will 9.1 be developed more?
Strickman214: when will be da release
Velvettpie: why do I always get the sorry your connection is unavailable

BetaGuestSpeaker: sorting is much faster in the saved mail filing cabinet in Helix than in 9.0
GeorgeKnighton: Is there any chance of anti-advertising plugins becoming available for the browser? This is a great and well known weakness of all AOL browsers.
BetaGuestSpeaker: George: AOL's business model relies on advertising, because we made broadband membership free last year
BetaGuestSpeaker: but you never know what 3rd parties will create
Velvettpie: also will helix be like ie7 no time outs this annoys more with AOL I click on a webpage and it can’t find I thank this is more with AOL servers
SBSBJB: ? will we ever be able to customize the toolbar, more like it is on the Client
Strickman214: are other toolbar going to be downloadable on AOL helix
Ysuire: My last question: will it be a version for Linux?
BetaGuestSpeaker: Velvettpie: we use IE7 for browsing (The AOL browser sits on top of IE7 or IE6), and we're still working to optimize the experience
RSpekin: I was surprised AOL Explorer made its return to an AOL product... with that, it looks "clunky" and not too "web2.0"-y... any improvements on the look-and-feel of the browser, in respect to Helix?

JTK456: Well, since we're helping AOL by Beta Testing, at least we should have the option of turning off the advertising on, at least our e-mail. Anyone agree?
SGW7011: I have a problem with the sign on process and the fact that it shows not only all of the screen names we associate with our AOL account, but it shows screen names that are in the current delete file
SGW7011: I have had much to say about the average AOL user, as opposed to the more tech savvy, and I think the average user would be scared of this
TaintedPrince: Is their any chance Helix could be launched with Mozilla's Firefox
SGW7011: I see that as a breach of personal privacy and think that many people would be upset to see such information made public to whoever might use their computer
RSpekin: to add: I like using AOL Explorer vs IE sometimes... just looks a bit cluttered
SGW7011: I see that as a breach of personal privacy and think that many people would be upset to see such information made public to whoever might use their computer
SGW7011: I have a problem with the sign on process and the fact that it shows not only all of the screen names we associate with our AOL account, but it shows screen names that are in the current delete file
ForumDesigner: Will those of us who pay for AOL be able to keep AOL ads out of our mail? If not, it seems there is no value in paying.
Strickman214: what about ter toolbar functions like live toolbar?
SGW7011: that combined one question with another, Suzy
BetaGuestSpeaker: SGW7011: We offer 9.1 and continue to support 9.1 as an alternative to Helix.
SGW7011: so you will go the way of two options
BetaGuestSpeaker: we're still looking into the screen-name list experience
SGW7011: thank you
BedaSeanB: any chance we can get out alerts back, lol?
BetaGuestQA: It should be fixed in the next beta.
turnerd10: is there going to be a media player?
Dglacierskier: When will keywords be added to Helix?
BetaGuestSpeaker: turnerd10: can you please be more specific -- are you referring to streaming media or media files you receive as an attachment?
Velvettpie: also wish the favorites would be on the left side
turnerd10: I mean like a player like in AOL open ride
TimEverts: I still use AOL Communicator but it is NOT Vista
Compatible so every time I want to start it I have to re-install it - I wish AOL would just update that mail program - I Love It!
BetaGuestSpeaker: turnerd10: at this point we're relying on Windows media player and the web players
BetaGuestSpeaker: thanks for the clarification

ApricotSP: My icons (Mail, AIM, Web) are too small for me to see... can I expect the icons to be capable of resizing?
BedaSeanB: what I think he means is integrated
BetaModerator: ApricotSP, you mean the icons on the toolbar?
BetaProjMgr: what resolution are you running?
Strickman214: why not put a mini windows media player installed in helix
BetaGuestSpeaker: the mail, IM, and web toolbar icons will be bigger in the next Beta
GeorgeKnighton: The reason she cannot see her icons is because we do not support large fonts. Is there *any* hope of getting Helix to properly (or more properly) scale to large fonts?
BetaGuestSpeaker: a later Beta I mean
Dglacierskier: Will Helix eventually replace 9.1 or complement it? Will 9.1 be developed more?
Kittens11021: ?
BetaGuestSpeaker: Helix and 9.1 are both in development, and they will both be available
Velvettpie: why do I always get the sorry your connection is unavailable?
BetaGuestQA: That is a bug. Sorry about that.

TimEverts: I just wish we had a simple program like AOL
Communicator to use for Vista
SBSBJB: ? will we ever be able to customize the toolbar, more like it is on the Client
Strickman214: how can it be fixed
turnerd10: does AOL really spam your computer?
RSpekin: I was surprised AOL Explorer made its return to an AOL product... with that, it looks "clunky" and not too "web2.0"-y... any improvements on the look-and-feel of the browser, in respect to Helix?
Arch2175: Will helix have chat rooms available?
BetaProjMgr: you should be able to do that now
ApricotSP: Yes... the ones there for AIM, the Mail, and the
Browser... I need them larger or at least magnification... otherwise, good!
SBSBJB: I mean with our own choice of icons like the client
SBSBJB: not the AOL ones
BETAPhederico: Sorry RSpekin...we'll get to your question next.
Velvettpie: gotcha im running the 9.1 and got the same info thanks
TimDan2000: Will Helix or 9.1 replace AOL 9 VR
Smcguirenyc: I have a question.
BetaProjMgr: just click the heart and add to the toolbar
TimEverts: Why don't I see what I send
BetaProjMgr: in the future you will be able to drag and drop
BetaGuestSpeaker: you can also add favorites to your toolbar from the "toolbar favorites" folder in favorites
SBSBJB: that I know, but the choice of icons is horrible
BetaProjMgr: also you will be able to add from AOL suggest
Joez412: Could the toolbar be more like a carousel as in 9.x?
BetaGuestSpeaker: the toolbar is a lot more integrated with favorites storage in Helix
BetaProjMgr: off the "more" button on the toolbar
BetaAteb: Moderation mode is on, which lets us (Beta staff) slow the rate of questions to a manageable level.
BetaAteb: Per TimEverts comment
BetaGuestSpeaker: re the explorer: we are still refining the browser so it matches the overall Helix design
BetaGuestSpeaker: final design is not yet in and we're still tweaking. what improvements would you like to see, RSpekin?
RSpekin: re: browser design, um... less boxy, more curves? I hated *hated* when the back button was bigger than the fwd button in AOLExplr
AntiAntiX: Sure would be nice if the "formal" chats were scheduled when those of not in EST were not working...Midday on weekends?
SBSBJB: ? will we ever see colored screen names in AIM
RSpekin: but in the helix product, the tabs are well integrated, and browsing is seamless
BetaGuestSpeaker: ok, thanks for the feedback -- we'll look into it
Dglacierskier: When will keywords be added to Helix?
BetaAteb: General note: We're happy to discuss any non-Helix issue offline or during any non-formal 'scheduled' chat time M@3p ET, T, TH@6p ET, and F@4p ET
Arch2175: Will a chat feature be added to helix?
BetaGuestSpeaker: Ctrl+K will be implemented in a future beta
TimEverts: I've never found a better mail client than the AOL
Communicator - It's not a big massive program - just a simple Very Easy To Use mail Program that I wish would work with Vista
SGW7011: Will the option come available to choose a toolbar choice and have it stick?
SBSBJB: ? will we ever see colored screen names in AIM
JFlynn280: When will the favorites folder be expanded from 2500 to unlimited?
BetaGuestSpeaker: AIM is looking at more personalization options, but we don't know where this lands in their future plans

JFlynn280: When will the favorites folder be expanded from 2500 to unlimited?
SGW7011: why did you feel a need to go to AIM when the AOL buddy list and IM system worked well? Many people actually don't like AIM, hence we use AOL
BETAPhederico: Kittens, your question will be next...so go ahead and ask it, and I'll post it next.
Smcguirenyc: Is it my turn yet?
BETAPhederico: Smcguirenyc, ask your question, and we'll get to it shortly, thank you.
BetaGuestQA: We are moving to the new Favorites system in Helix...that should allow for more favorites.
BetaAteb: Note: If you have a question that was lost in the shuffle or think of something later on, please send it to http://beta.aol.com/projects.php?project=helix&loc=feedback
TimothyAaron08: Has it ever been considered to implement the Browser into Helix where as you can't tell it's a separate app? To better explain, meaning the url box, favorites, etc. stuff be part of the helix screen? Jw
BetaProjMgr: you mean like it is in 9.0?
Arch2175: Will chat abilities be available on helix?
SBSBJB: ? will we see more uniformity in Mail as to where the buttons are located, right now they are top and bottom, should be 1 or the other
TimothyAaron08: Good point. Sorta, lol.
JFlynn280: What is the ETA for Helix?
BetaGuestSpeaker: Browser in Helix: we wanted to support tabs and streamline the toolbar, so this is why the browser and toolbar are more separate in Helix
SGW7011: why did you feel a need to go to AIM when the AOL buddy list and IM system worked well? Many people actually don't like AIM, hence we use AOL
Dglacierskier: Why are the system requirements for Helix so high?
BETAPhederico: Arch, your question is coming up...please be patient, thanks!
Arch2175: you’re welcome
TimEverts: Only thing I have to say about Helix is that it's a bloated memory hogging program that I will not be using - don't need all that other crap with
it - just want a decent mail client like Communicator!
BetaGuestSpeaker: SGW7011: we needed to streamline the way we built and supported instant messaging clients. it's not as cost effective to build several separate buddy lists
BetaGuestSpeaker: so we wanted to integrate AIM, and make use of all the features they've been adding over the years.
Kittens11021: what about keywords?
BETAPhederico: Keywords are coming soon Kittens, it was answered earlier in this chat.
SGW7011: many features that keep us from wanting to use, or like AIM
BetaGuestSpeaker: also, we have had many requests to provide a more consistent experience
BETAPhederico: That's ok, feel free to ask another question.
SGW7011: more consistent with everything outside AOL?
BetaGuestSpeaker: we wanted to improve consistency between AIM standalone and the in-client IM experience
Kittens11021: what if AOL is not the home page. how do you use aim?
Arch2175: Will chat abilities be available on helix?
SGW7011: As a long time AOL user/member, I have to say, it saddens me to see such a unique system that appealed to so many, become its generic cousin
TimothyAaron08: If this is to off-topic, just ignore it! Will we be seeing AIM in 9.1?
Smcguirenyc: Can you use more AOL classic branding like the running man in Helix to make it look unique?
BetaModerator: Arch2175, yes chat capability is coming in a future beta build
Arch2175: thank you
TheBUDWISER: ! AGREE WITH SGW
Velvettpie: when’s the next beta release
Arch2175: this may have been asked and answered but is there a chat about AOL 9.1?
BetaGuestSpkr2: we still have a lot of placeholder art throughout Helix. we're working on the iconography, look for it in upcoming builds
JFlynn280: What is the ETA for Helix?
SGW7011: I will, but keep in mind, people don't need AOL to use AIM and a browser
Smcguirenyc: The running man is so distinctive.
BETAPhederico: You guys know about "when" questions...
BetaModerator: I'm sorry we cannot answer "when" questions. Helix will be done when it's ready
BETAPhederico: It's on the way folks, next question.
Arch2175: if I have helix now how will I know when a future beta build is ready to be installed?
Velvettpie: will there be an icon for aim like in 9.0 where I can send website to aim buddy
BetaGuestSpkr2: it's there now! just click on the red heart in the browser, and you'll see that option
BetaGuestSpeaker: Velvettpie: you can send websites to buddies today from the heart menu in the browser chrome
BetaGuestSpeaker: is that what you mean?
BETAPhederico: Ask any questions you want answered and we'll post it in the order they come in...thank you!
Smcguirenyc: Personally, I like AIM. Take AIM wherever you go!
Kittens11021: will and can we use aim and how if you don’t use aim as a home page

BetaModerator: We only have a few more minutes for questions, we'll answer a few more. If yours doesn't get answered, please post it in the message boards and we'll answer it there
SBSBJB: ? will we see more uniformity in Mail as to where the buttons are located, right now they are top and bottom, should be 1 or the other
BetaModerator: We'll then be opening the chat for the Helix team to ask you some questions
Smcguirenyc: Now you're talking!
Kittens11021: will we be able to use aim when not on the home page
BetaGuestSpkr2: we're trying to make the transition from 9.0 as smooth as we can, in part by leaving as many things in the same place as we can
BetaGuestSpkr2: however we had to move the buttons in the write/compose window to the top.
SGW7011: So, as we saw in some branding, this is going to be AOL 10.0?
SBSBJB: but in the client they are on the bottom, not top
BetaGuestSpkr2: but the mail ui is not final, we're still in beta and doing usability testing. so please let us know what you think!
SBSBJB: I'm referring to the Mailbox and Read
TimEverts: My Last Words Are Please Bring Back Communicator - it is just what I need to use without all that extra crap in there that I don't use!!!!!
BetaGuestSpeaker: OK, how's this for a question? What should we call Helix when we launch it?
BetaModerator: Okay, thank you very much! We're going to turn the moderation feature off now, please ONLY answer the questions posted by the Helix team
Arch2175: Helix
SBSBJB: Helix
SGW7011: It seems you've already named it AOL 10.0
TimothyAaron08: Helix
Arch2175: It’s a good name
TaintedPrince: AOL helix is great
BetaGuestSpeaker: Sadly, we can't use Helix due to trademark issues
Arch2175: Ok AOL 10
Smcguirenyc: AOL Futura
SBSBJB: with the cap X because everyone wants ten
BetaModerator: Any other suggestions?
BetaGuestSpeaker: we need more good ideas!
Arch2175: I like AOL futura
TaintedPrince: AOL rubrick
Kittens11021: x is good as it can mean anything
SGW7011: AOL Xtreme
Kittens11021: does apple own the trademark for x
DavesLine: sorry missed the beginning ... Is helix a replacement for OpenRide.
TaintedPrince: AOL 3D
Arch2175: AOL Next
TaintedPrince: yeah
SBSBJB: AOL Xtreme
TaintedPrince: AOL NEXT is wonderful too
BetaGuestSpeaker: Another question: Did we hit the mark when it comes to windows management, with features like App Map and the tabbed interface?
Kittens11021: aolxd
ApricotSP: Maybe some of you may not know this, but some of your Known Issues don't affect me!! Did I get a pre Beta 2? I think you should call it AOL Slash
SBSBJB: yes
FBayliff: Since all we hear on the board When is AOL 10 coming? Mt vote is AOL 10
GeorgeKnighton: App Map is great.
TaintedPrince: I love the App Map
BetaGuestSpeaker: feedback on tabbed mail?
SGW7011: frankly, I don't like the tabbed bit....I often want to see more than one window at a time
Arch2175: yea it’s all good
TimothyAaron08: I would like to see some odd word with no relation to it. Like Firefox didn't mean much before it became a browser, Helix doesn't mean a lot, so why not something else that is new and unique?
BetaModerator: You can ungroup the tabs, Sharon
Smcguirenyc: I want select all deleting.
GeorgeKnighton: You had to make a choice when showing the different mail accounts. Tabbed is fine.
SGW7011: oh?
Smcguirenyc: Personally, I like AIM. Take AIM wherever you go!
Kittens11021: will and can we use aim and how if you don't use aim as a home page
BetaModerator: We only have a few more minutes for questions, we'll answer a few more. If yours doesn't get answered, please post it in the message boards and we'll answer it there
SBSBJB: ? will we see more uniformity in Mail as to where the buttons are located, right now they are top and bottom, should be 1 or the other
Strickman214: AOL xpress
SGW7011: that would be a good thing
Arch2175: Tabbing rocks in AOL next
Smcguirenyc: Select all/ delete
ApricotSP: The AppMap has some similarities to Expose... score!

BetaGuestSpeaker: Thanks for the feedback -- do you think App Map was easy to find?
GeorgeKnighton: Oh, yes.
Arch2175: Yep
GeorgeKnighton: Brilliant, really.
Kittens11021: will we be able to use aim when not on AOL home page or set as a home page
Dglacierskier: yes
Strickman214: yes
Kittens11021: what is app map?
TaintedPrince: the display Boxely with running apps
BETAPhederico: App Map is the button next tot he search feature on the toolbar Kittens.
BetaProjMgr: Kittens11021: 4th button from the left on the toolbar
Arch2175: Wow think of the campaign slogans for AOL next
ApricotSP: AOL Slash, Arch, I think Slash is a great name! Next is taken by somebody!
Smcguirenyc: A pimp my AOL feature?
BETAPhederico: Lets you see a grouped view of all available windows
BetaGuestSpeaker: OK, we'd like to know how you feel about the quality of Helix so far. On a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being the best, how would you rate the quality of Helix?
Smcguirenyc: 7
SGW7011: can you use the windows from there, or just see them?
Arch2175: 7
Kittens11021: 6
SBSBJB: 10 for me
ForumDesigner: I am having some trouble with the mail updating with the "you've got mail" notification. It tells me I have mail but it's not there, A while later I hear a click and it's there. Otherwise I LOVE it.
SBSBJB: I use it more than the client now
Dglacierskier: 8
Strickman214: app map shows all your windows data open in helix
TaintedPrince: I love using it
ApricotSP: How about 100 (10~!)
Arch2175: who has next?
TimEverts: 1
SBSBJB: and resources usage is better than the client
BetaModerator: That's a bug, ForumDesigner. Keep another mail as New and it'll show up.

Smcguirenyc: Open Ride mail rocked!
SGW7011: I want the focus in mail to go to the next mail after I have deleted one
TaintedPrince: I bogged about it, on my AOL journal.
SGW7011: rather than having to reset back to there each time
ForumDesigner: The mail program is wonderful in design though.
Xxogmiosxx: AOL 10 x 10
BetaModerator: TimEverts, if you feel it rates a 1 can you please send me an email with your complaints?
BetaModerator: that goes for anyone else
Kittens11021: make it an option
GeorgeKnighton: The only thing that really bugs me is why money is being spent on an entirely new application instead of working on the client.
Smcguirenyc: AOL Quantum
Arch2175: AOL X2
SGW7011: AOL toys for boys
Xxogmiosxx: AOL 4All
Smcguirenyc: AOL Solid Gold
TimothyAaron08: And we're gonna make it be available at AOL R' Us too... right? =)
SGW7011: it's not for all
BetaModerator: George, we're working on 9.1 and Helix concurrently.
TaintedPrince: AOL was quantum that's good
SBSBJB: George client is still being worked on
GeorgeKnighton: I know...but...why?
ApricotSP: And maybe even allow to tear out a window? AOL Slash would be a perfect name then!
Ysuire: there will be something for Linux?
Arch2175: 9.1 is not good
TaintedPrince: quantum computer. cool
Smcguirenyc: Pimp My AOL?
Xxogmiosxx: I hope something for Linux comes
Xxogmiosxx: really bad
GeorgeKnighton: Favourites and similar items should be taken from the server, not the computer on which Helix is installed, by the way.
Ysuire: I say that because some PC's are now sold with Ubuntu so I am worried for them
BetaGuestSpeaker: Another question, this time on performance: 1 to 10 again, how would you rate the performance and speed? are you having speed issues?
Arch2175: AOL Nxt
BetaModerator: Favourites will be imported from AOL 9.0 host in next beta build, George.
Smcguirenyc: 8
BetaGuestSpeaker: speed = launching the software, etc.
GeorgeKnighton: 7
Strickman214: AOL phelix
Arch2175: 7
SBSBJB: no speed issues
Dglacierskier: the only thing that bugs me about Helix is that it uses much system resources
GeorgeKnighton: Thank you for that answer.
ApricotSP: I'd hit you with a 10 for AOL Slash (I mean Helix)
SBSBJB: ah ok
GeorgeKnighton: Sign on process works very quickly. That was good to see.
BedaSeanB: so a 0 sooz?
TaintedPrince: I want helix to be a light as possibly
SBSBJB: on speed I find the loading of Explorer after launching helix a bit slow
Smcguirenyc: Celebrity AOL
BetaGuestSpeaker: we're aware that system resources are a problem, and we are definitely planning on further optimizations
Arch2175: I would like to uninstall 9.1 and use helix code name AOL next
SGW7011: we could do a quick speed check with ctrl+y in the client, any way to check from here?
TaintedPrince: AOL Xcell
Strickman214: My AOL
Arch2175: AOL Xpress
BetaSuzyQ: The Help About features should be there in a later build, Sharon
SGW7011: ok
Xxogmiosxx: I want AOL on Linux please
BetaGuestSpeaker: Question: do you find unauthenticated browsing useful?
ApricotSP: And Mail, AIM, and Web icons will be improved in AOL Slash, right? (Slash = Helix)
BetaGuestSpeaker: (for those on broadband)
GeorgeKnighton: No, I do not find unauthenticated browsing useful.
Arch2175: Wastes time
TimothyAaron08: What is unauthenticated browsing?
SGW7011: you mean having the browsing ability before signing on?
GeorgeKnighton: I love the AOL proxy.
Kittens11021: what does that mean?
BetaGuestSpeaker: browsing without signing in -- what do you think of this feature?
SGW7011: useless
TaintedPrince: I really would like Firefox to be considered for Helix , REALLY
Arch2175: Don’t like it
SBSBJB: Are we going to see Themes?
Smcguirenyc: It's fine except on 9.1, too many windows.
Kittens11021: it’s good
Xxogmiosxx: security flaw
GeorgeKnighton: Using the AOL proxy is a *huge* advantage to having AOL.
TimEverts: It's just a big bloated program that slows your computer down - Wish we would have AOL Communicator back again!!!!!
ApricotSP: It's easy, but I like to sign in more~! It shows use!
SGW7011: when we come to AOL, we want to check mail
SGW7011: we sign on
Smcguirenyc: AOL Timeless
Dglacierskier: yes, there are times all I want to do is check a website. It helps!

GeorgeKnighton: Even my FIOS is faster when used in conjunction with the AOL Proxy.
SGW7011: signing on takes a nanosecond
Arch2175: will security be available on helix for vista?
Kittens11021: then put it something you can turn on and off
SBSBJB: and can we please have default font and colors in Mail PLEASE LOL
BetaGuestSpeaker: We miss themes too, they're on our roadmap but we don' t know when they'll be in.
SGW7011: all fonts, not a selected few
BetaGuestSpeaker: default fonts and colors -- we're also working on that too
Arch2175: SECURITY
SBSBJB: TY
Smcguirenyc: Select all/ delete in mail?
BetaGuestSpeaker: Arch2175: can you clarify what you're looking for when you say "security"?
SGW7011: a way to resize a window and have it hold
BetaModerator: Do you mean the AOL Security Suite, Arch2175?
Arch2175: Yes for vista
Kittens11021: how do you use aim if AOL is not the home page?
BetaGuestSpeaker: SGW7011: Helix remembers your window sizes and locations
BetaModerator: That's not a part of Helix, but it's already available at KW: Security
TimEverts: Amen to the one who said we want to see our mail - that's all I need is a decent mail program without all the other crap!
BetaModerator: It's McAfee and free for AOL members
TaintedPrince: I want there to be a mode in helix the takes a way color enhancement and makes Helix mimic classic windows
SBSBJB: yes it does remember and I like that
Arch2175: Yea I can’t get it to work on windows vista says that it’s not compatible
Arch2175: and won’t load
SGW7011: I can’t resize my mailbox
BetaGuestSpeaker: TimEverts: we agree that there's a need for that, but Helix is an integrated software and AOL has never been just a mail program
TaintedPrince: you know like the feature in windows that adjust for performance
SGW7011: AND
Dglacierskier: I have Vista and Helix works fine on it
Smcguirenyc: You've Got Webmail!
SGW7011: can we open a write mail without the mail box opening at the same time?
Arch2175: No I mean security not helix
SGW7011: it's annoying to have to close it
GeorgeKnighton: I'm leaving for dinner, but thank you very much everybody for the opportunity to find out more...and vent a little.
BratGirl1216: is helix user friendly? My husband is not very computer literate
BetaModerator: Thanks, George
ApricotSP: Sign on is the speed of light, AIM is way easy to use, Mail and Web build best, although I'd vouch on the toolbar icon size for those features and an option to slap color on!
TimEverts: AOL had an EXCELLENT program with Communicator - The good stuff always gets replaced with worthless crap!!
BetaGuestSpeaker: SGW7011: we're evaluating write mail. we're also adding keystrokes eventually so you can write mail with a keyboard shortcut
SGW7011: I'd sure like to see it look more like the write mail we know and love
TimothyAaron08: AOL Communicator was nice.
SBSBJB: Helix is not crap, if you don't like, don't use it!!
SGW7011: but I have to say, I was surprised to find sigs would hold a .gif image
SGW7011: that was a good thing
TimEverts: I still use it - It's Awesome - Just doesn't work with Vista
TaintedPrince: Helix is so much fun.
BedaSeanB: right now they do have a toolbar that has a write mail icon
Arch2175: OK so I guess in not getting security with AOL since it doesn’t work with vista
TimEverts: Have to reinstall it every time I want to open it
SGW7011: yes, but it opens the mail box at the same time
ApricotSP: AOL Slash (Helix) is better than 9.1, but I keep both.
SBSBJB: Arch go to Keyword Safety
BetaModerator: Arch, have you tried to download it in the last few days?
SBSBJB: there is now a McAfee thru AOL for Vista
SGW7011: If I had to choose, it would be 9.1 for me....the AOL format is what has kept me with AOL for years
Arch2175: no it was last week
Smcguirenyc: AOL FastForward
BetaModerator: There's a brand new version that works with Vista that just came out
BratGirl1216: is it hard to use for people that are not good on computers and used to AOL 9.0
BetaGuestSpeaker: BratGirl1216: Helix is designed to be user friendly. when we launch, we'll have a lot of help and settings options to answer any questions.
BetaModerator: try today
TextBookPscyo: question: has anyone had any problems running AOL software 9.1 or 9.0vr and McAfee internet security suite
Arch2175: oh ok thank u
Kittens11021: no
BratGirl1216: no
SGW7011: Helix will scare most non tech type users...it looks too different
ApricotSP: Good point Dglacierskier!
Smcguirenyc: I have TextBook.
Dglacierskier: thank you

TextBookPscyo: McAfee told me I had to pick one of the other to run or I could try opening the ports the AOL software uses
TaintedPrince: if vista has anything to do with it, that won't last
Smcguirenyc: I uninstalled 9.1 and gave up on it.
TaintedPrince: because vista is NOT XP
SGW7011: 9.1 works fine for me
SBSBJB: 9.1 works fine here too
TextBookPscyo: I think that is what I am going to have to do too
Smcguirenyc: I kept getting connection errors.
BetaGuestSpeaker: SGW7011: we're glad you're happy with 9.1, and we appreciate your feedback. That's why we've offered a choice here.
TextBookPscyo: it worked fine until I installed the McAfee security software
ApricotSP: I'm almost a pro, Smc, I only play as a dumb person, but I get in, tinker, then it's my way!
SGW7011: the average AOL user wants to sign on, check email, IM a friend or family member and maybe chat a little
TextBookPscyo: actually it still does work fine if I close all the services that McAfee starts up
TimEverts: Yes, but I don't want to install the whole AOL client just to read my friggin' mail
ApricotSP: And I mean the Settings!
BetaModerator: Tim, you don't need to install an AOL client to read your mail.
SGW7011: you can use aol.com for that Tim
Smcguirenyc: You have web mail now.
BetaGuestSpeaker: Tim: you can access AOL mail from Outlook or other POP clients
Coulldayze: Smcguirency, obviously you're not over 55 years old. Isn't the idea to keep AOL users?
ApricotSP: Even the config Searchterm in AIM!!
BetaModerator: You can use Outlook or any other number of POP3 and IMAP mail clients
TimEverts: I haven't used the AOL software since Communicator came out
BetaModerator: as well as Webmail
SGW7011: some people are tech oriented, but most still are not
Coulldayze: wow well you're ahead of me then
Smcguirenyc: In 1995, I couldn't turn on a computer.
BetaModerator: I think that about wraps it up. Thanks everyone!
BetaGuestSpeaker: Thanks for everyone's comments, it was so insightful and we really appreciate it
TaintedPrince: The youth are the ones that need the push, that's the core of AIM's reach
SBSBJB: TY Mod and all our guests
BetaGuestSpeaker: I hope we answered your questions!
SBSBJB: was a great chat
BetaGuestSpeaker: Thanks for testing Helix!
SGW7011: thanks for coming, y'all
BetaGuestSpkr2: thanks everyone! please keep up the feedback - we appreciate it!
Jubileegee: Thanks, devs
TaintedPrince: yay
TaintedPrince: HELIX!
SBSBJB: Speaker u went thru my list LOL
BetaGuestSpeaker: Let's do this again soon
BetaModerator: Do you guys think we should do another one these in a few months?
BetaGuestSpeaker: another chat in September would be great
debrat4062: Yes
SBSBJB: YES
TaintedPrince: YES!
Irishrose556: yes
Dglacierskier: I do want to try 9.1 and hopefully see it improve, but it is based on old technology.
Helix is I want to try 9.1. Maybe AOL will modernize it. But it is based on dated technology
France1243: YES
BedaSeanB: bring back my sports scores!!!!
Kittens11021: yes
BetaModerator: Great! We'll plan another one after a few more beta releases
ApricotSP: Thanks! I'm plugging out of the room! Helix into Slash!!
BedaSeanB: and most definitely
Jubileegee: That will work
TaintedPrince: I’m intermediate.
France1243: You can always use the Feedback Button to say what you'd like
SGW7011: I've tried to make a lot of noise based on the average user
SBSBJB: MOD I think we set a record tonight
SGW7011: the beta tester, is not the average user
BetaModerator: Sharon, trust me, they do TONS of usability testing in Marketing
France1243: Or don't like
Smcguirenyc: They could be some day.
BetaModerator: with non-members, current members, etc.
SGW7011: I hope they start it early with something that will be a lot different
TextBookPscyo: everyone: what kind of testing does AOL do in terms of compatibility testing with other vendors
BetaModerator: We rely a lot on the beta testing phase to test against third-party programs, but we test against some of the more standard apps during QA testing
