Deluge Torrent Client Aims to Thwart ISP Traffic Shaping

Written by enigmax on June 14, 2007

With the latest release of the Deluge BitTorrent client, Linux users wishing to counter the slow download speeds associated with ISP traffic shaping now have a viable alternative to Azureus, Ktorrent and Rtorrent.

Here at TorrentFreak we’ve addressed the issue of ISP traffic shaping many times, offering tutorials on how to minimize it’s effects and detailing its benefits.

Essentially, when your ISP traffic-shapes he attempts to control how you use your bandwidth, giving priority to certain traffic but unfortunately for some BitTorrent users, also slowing down transfers associated with this protocol. However, by turning on protocol encryption in a BitTorrent client which supports it, it makes it harder for traffic shaping devices to recognize BitTorrent traffic. Hopefully the end result is faster transfers.

Windows clients such as uTorrent and Azureus offer protocol encyption and until now, Linux users had a choice of opting for Azurues, Ktorrent and Rtorrent. With the arrival of the latest version of the Deluge client, there is another choice for Linux users wishing to thwart their ISP’s attempts to slow down their BitTorrent transfers. Here is the changelog for Deluge 0.5.1;

Changes since the 0.5.0 release include:

* Peer Exchange
* Encryption
* UPnP + NATPMP
* Improved user interface
* Redesigned preferences dialog
* Startup and shutdown bugs fixed

Deluge was originally called gTorrent as it was the first BitTorrent client for the GNOME desktop.

The Deluge client is (of course) free and can be downloaded here

I’m not a linux user, but this is great news, the more the protocol encryptation expands the more people will start to used it and hear about “traffic shapping” so the more solutions will come out, and the threat will disccused.

thanks for the good news

There’s a major “bug” in this encryption (same in µTorrent, Azu, etc) .. all tracker connection is plain text.
My fuckin’ ISP can detect this plain text connection with the tracker and do the shapping stuff.

So, it’s useless …

“Shapping stuff” I nearly lol’d out of my chair.

How is shaping traffic to the tracker harmful? That’s, what, a few tens of KB every hour?

Theres no point in continuing with ISP that decide what we should do.

My experience is that such ISPs are loosing their customers. ie. Most of my friends have switched to torrent friendly ISP. So simple

Great news! The app is becoming better and better. Finally I can switch from µTorrent (via wine) to Deluge.

Deluge is alright, but KTorrent is alot better feature wise and feels alot more like uTorrent.

No, your ISP is useless and it’s your fault. Stop paying them for crippling down the Internet and sooner or later scrambling data to avoid aggressive shaping no longer going to be necessarily.

I have no other choice…

lwf, your mantra is all well and good for countries that have competing ISP’s, but is utter bullshit for others with a single monopolizing entity. So please stop spamming this silly message all over the internet, because it has gotten pretty old in all P2P forums since they started this BT-capping crap, and really, people are sick of it.

I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

There are only 2 broadband ISPs serving the North of Thailand. TOT and TT&T (MaxNet).

Only one of these ISPs is available according to what area of Chaing Mai. Both TOT and TT&T are controlled by the same outfit, CAT Telecom.

Both these ISPs have begun capping Torrent downloads and uploads, so if you live in the North of Thailand, you are stuffed basically.

Although I started using Deluge just a few weeks ago, I like it already. Before it, I used utorrent and Azureus, but this client is very, very nice. There’s only one thing that puzzles me a bit: when I’m uploading, the “waste” is twice the amount I upload… at least that’s what I presume it represents.. So, my question is: is there a way to reduce this?
Anyway, Deluge is a great client and I think I’m gonna stick to it a long time from now on.

I have been using several torrent clients for the last two years but deluge really impressed me a lot. Because It gave me around 100kbs download speed. But the version for windows is still need improvements. Because sometimes the client is freezing and does not respond on windows. I would really appreciate if the technical team can fix things.
