The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering global stewardship for Antarctica through a key update to its bylaws, further solidifying Antarctic ambassadorship as a central pillar of its mission.

The amendment was approved during IAATO’s annual meeting, which was held last week (April 15–17) in Cascais, Portugal.

Steve Jones, IAATO Antarctic Ambassadorship Committee chair

“Antarctic Ambassadorship has always been at the heart of our mission and vision,” said Steve Jones, Chair of IAATO’s Antarctic Ambassadorship Committee. “This bylaw update represents a natural progression as we continue to grow our ambassadorship initiatives and broaden our global network of advocates committed to protecting this extraordinary region.”

The revised bylaw formally commits IAATO members to cultivate a corps of Antarctic Ambassadors - individuals inspired by first-hand or other meaningful experiences of Antarctica who champion its protection through education, advocacy, and environmentally responsible choices. The language emphasises that ambassadorship efforts should be encouraged and highlighted without regard to commercial gain.

The announcement coincides with Antarctic Ambassadorship Day (April 24), a global celebration highlighting ambassador-led activities and inspiring others to begin their journey in advocating for the region.

IAATO’s Antarctic Ambassadors initiative unites a global community of individuals passionate about the White Continent. Ambassadors are encouraged to educate others, promote policies aligned with the Antarctic Treaty System, and make environmentally conscious decisions in their everyday lives - all with the shared goal of preserving Antarctica for future generations.

IAATO maintains that responsible tourism, grounded in stringent environmental protocols, is vital in cultivating a deeper public understanding of Antarctica’s ecological importance and role in the global climate system.

“The power of informed, passionate voices is essential,” added Jones. “IAATO’s members are united in the belief that every visitor can become an advocate, and every advocate can help make a difference.”
