Check out Panarama X from Provue.
Panorama X has elements of database and spreadsheet technology in a single package. Like a spreadsheet, Panorama X is RAM based for speed and flexibility, but with all of the data processing power of a full-blown database application.

There is a trial version available for testing.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am aware of Panorama X and very intrigued by it but haven't tried it yet. Since you might be familiar with it, I had a couple questoins:

  1. My impression was that like FileMaker, you cannot drop a Panorama X file into iCloud or Dropbox etc. to have a database synced between Macs. Is that correct?
  2. It seems to be the product of Jim Rea. Is he the sole developer? I gather he has developed the app for decades, and he has a graying beard on his forum profile pic. I was wondering if there are other devs that would continue the product if he someday retired.

I have not used the product recently as I am retired and have no need. Yes, it has been around a long time. I do not know anything about staffing, continuity planning, etc. Contact Jim if you need this info.

ProVUE Development was founded in 1977 by Jim Rea, while he was an electronic engineering student at Cal Poly Pomona.

For info:

From his press kit: "If you have any more questions about Panorama X, wish to ask general questions about software development or the Mac application industry, or wish to request an evaluation copy of Panorama X, please don’t hesitate to contact:

Thanks Efrem and Superscape.....we currently maintain a database of memberships (over 700) in Excel....we run trials every month and export the data to a CSV files and then we want to update the results for each member that ran in the trial -- its a bit long winded doing this by hand in Excel so looking to simplify this process somehow....i am thinking it might be a harder task than i thought......
If I understand your issue correctly, then I would use the app "Keep It". It is one of those "note apps" which really is a database where each "note" actually is a "data container" where you (on top of writing notes, of course) can store all sorts of files. In a note you can also make a simple table. So you could make a note for each member and record whatever results you are recording in a table in that member's note.

At least with Numbers you could also keep the Numbers sheet inside a note and maintain that Numbers sheet from within the Keep It note. The sheet will open from within Keep It and be saved automatically back into Keep It after editing.

The app is available on Mac, iPad and iPhone and synchronizes all notes (including content) via iCloud.

Ugh. The developer of Tap Forms has announced a new app, Tap Forms Pro, and while it sounds like a nice upgrade, it will only be available with a subscription license, at least for the time being.

Not going there, so I guess it will be another case of watching an app rot with each new version of the OS.

Meanwhile, the promise of a free personal-use FMP license remains vaporware, and some of the excuses given for that situation were laughable. I even sent a note to the original news outlet that broke that story, asking if they could do a follow up. They said they'd try, but crickets…

Lol, so I have to go subscription just to get proper 'Dark Mode' support. Been using it for years but it's really not that great. Having to constantly write javascript to do simple things that should be available natively in the app is pretty weak for software that presents itself as user friendly. Guess I'll end up just going back to using spreadsheets since the personal database landscape is pretty grim currently.

Do you need a GUI or would you be good with a command-line database? Duckdb provides an easy to administer singlefile database accessible from a SQL CLI (ODBC optional). Pretty good at importing CSV. Also supports Excel import and export. I wouldn't normally recommend for someone looking at Filemaker Pro or Tap Forms Pro but you mentioned already writing JavaSscript...

I have a foot in spreadsheets, and the other in Tap Forms, but not to a deep extent.

I'd love to be able to just run, and modernize some of the FMP databases I built for myself during the days when it was also part of my work, but I guess that's a pretty small market, and why it is mostly underserved.

At this point, I'd even welcome a modern-day Bento.

Hi All
I am looking at running a simple database on MAcBook pro and need to be able to input excel csv files regularly and also design and pull data reports easily in a GUI.
Just wondering if anyone can recommend anything please?
thanks
Sue
