Microsoft Graph is the unified API gateway for Microsoft 365. Using the data and intelligence in Microsoft 365 you can build apps that reach millions of users. Microsoft Graph is ever evolving, adding new capabilities and unlocking new scenarios for custom solutions.
The ability to understand how a tenant’s resources are being consumed is an important part of maintaining tenant health. We are excited to announce that we are beginning the journey to give customers more insight and control over how applications access their data through Microsoft Graph – we are introducing a new Microsoft Graph API usage report available today as a beta API in Microsoft Graph.
Usage reporting API
The usage reporting API provides information on Microsoft Graph API usage for the tenant. The API will also provide information about individual applications API usage.
Microsoft Graph has a very large surface area covering many different APIs, with different calling patterns, for different Microsoft services. To help understand usage patterns across such disparate APIs we created groups of APIs we are calling service areas. Service areas represent sections of common functionality delivered by Microsoft Graph, generally aligned to product offerings. Our initial service areas will be:
- Microsoft Exchange
- Microsoft Teams calling
- Microsoft Teams messaging
- Microsoft Teams presence
We may add additional service areas over time.
The usage reporting API is rolling out to the Beta endpoint today. Get started using the new API by reading the documentation.
Getting the most out of Microsoft Graph
Periodically reviewing the contents of the Microsoft Graph API usage report to see how individual applications are using Microsoft Graph can give you useful insight into the tenant’s overall health. This report is a great starting point to remind your application developers that maintaining healthy and optimized applications is key to getting the most value out of Microsoft Graph.
These resources are always useful for developers looking to improve their app’s efficiency using Microsoft Graph.
