Teacher in trouble after telling student they're from a 'third world, island country'

— PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (WPEC) - Shock, anger and outrage ensues after a video surfaces allegedly showing a Palm Beach Gardens High School teacher telling a student they are from a "third world, island country where they don’t have doors."

The video is taking social media by storm and caught James Leger’s eye.

“We have doors in Haiti, it hurts, that’s humiliation,” said Leger, a leader in the Haitian community. He says the video shows the teacher belittling a Haitian student.

“She was really hurt, especially when other kids were laughing at her while she was being bullied by the teacher," he said. "We send our kids to the schools for you to teach them, not to bully them."

Leger says he’s been in touch with the student’s family, adding Monday's incident left her anxious and on edge.

“We are not asking to fire the teacher, we are just asking for a public apology from that teacher to the Haitian community for what he said,” Leger said.

Leger tells WPEC the teacher has been removed from the classroom.

WPEC has also reached out to the school district for details and are waiting to hear back.

Leger is organizing a rally at Palm Beach Gardens High School in response to the alleged incident. It begins at 7 a.m. Friday morning in front of the school.
