Description:
Located at a major intersection of land and sea cargo traffic, the border towns of Port Huron, Michigan, and Sarnia, Ontario, are connected by the world's only internationally-owned bridge. In summer 2009, a private US company began to fly overhead a 50-foot helium balloon with a surveillance camera capable of reading a ship's name from 14 km (more than 8 miles) away. The sudden presence of a far-seeing camera in the sky sparked strong reaction on both sides of the border -- from formal protest by the Canadian government and US and Canadian elected officials to grassroots actions. Organized through word of mouth and online social networking tools, the Moon the Balloon
protest, from which this web archive draws its name, delved into a rich symbology for expressing the sense of surveillance having gone too far, and a primal protest rooted in the local area's tradition of independence and personal liberty.

"On the Glorious Hill" is a new blog being published on the seminary website starting this week and running for fifteen consecutive weeks. With seven different authors contributing, each entry will showcase a different aspect of life here on the Ridge; pieces of a dazzling mosaic that make up the legacy of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. The idea for the blog originated with President Michael Cooper-White, who, in the midst of the transition to United Lutheran Seminary, has been reflecting with "a great cloud of witnesses" on this special place-- the crossroads of history and hope.

In August of 2014, the Archive-It team put out a call for URLs related to the August 9th shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. Soon after we were joined by Archive-It partner Washington University in St. Louis, MO who contributed lists of URLs and solicited URLs from communities in and around Ferguson. Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities contributed a significant number of URLs extracted from tweets about Michael Brown and Ferguson. In December we expanded the collection to include content related to the July 17th chokehold death of Eric Garner in Staten Island, NY, and the reactions around the country to the acquittal of the police officers in both cases. The collection then progressed further to reflect the movement building in reaction to police violence against people of color. Today the #blacklivesmatter Web Archive contains news articles, blogs, social media, and other websites related to Ferguson, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, protests and demonstrations around the country, and seeks to document the movement as it grows and evolves. Note: Many of these sites contain videos, some of which may not play back in the page. To view archived videos click on the Videos link in the yellow banner at the top of the archived web page.

Description:
On September 26, 2014, police and unidentified gunman believed to be drug cartel gang members allegedly ambushed a convoy of buses carrying teacher-trainee student activists from Ayotzinapa College in the state of Guerrero. In the central plaza of Iguala, six persons were shot to death. Three of the victims were students. The other three were random citizens that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The attack was brutal. Seventeen other students were wounded, and forty-three others were kidnapped. The activists were committed to helping small rural farmers and farm workers and were opposed to the new education reforms implemented by the government. The drug traffickers, their bosses, and the local politicians did not like the students' activism for various reasons. Twenty two police officers are now in custody for homicide and kidnapping along with four alleged drug traffickers. The mayor of Iguala and his wife are said to be behind the kidnapping, and the Governor of Guerrero has resigned under pressure. In the weeks after the disappearance of the students, nine mass graves have been discovered in the hills outside of Iguala. The bodies had been doused with gasoline and set on fire. It is not known if these are the bodies of the abducted students. As of December 2014, the official word is that none of the kidnapped students have been definitively found.
