Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition that causes interruptions in breathing during sleep. Aside from sleepiness, it can create a higher risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and insulin resistance. OSA is a serious health risk.
OSA occurs when muscles relax and structures of the mouth, throat and nose obstruct airflow. Symptoms include:
- High blood pressure
- Snoring loudly
- Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Morning headaches
- Gasping for breath during sleep or pauses in breathing
- Trouble concentrating
- Depression
- Sleep difficulties
People who suspect they have sleep apnea should see treatment right away.
