About

Mission
Urban Farming is non-partisan and non-denominational. The Urban Farming mission is to Create an Abundance of Food for All in Our Generation by supporting and encouraging the establishment of organic gardens on unused land and space, while raising awareness about healthy principles. We work with youth, adults, and seniors, and our gardens and healthy principles help to create economically vibrant systems that uplift communities around the world.
How We Started
- Urban Farming was founded by Recording Artist, Author, Taja Sevelle. Taja was offered her first record deal from the legendary, Prince, in the same week that she was accepted into the Berklee College of Music. Opting for the record deal, the first song that she wrote on her debut CD (Paisley Park/Warner/Reprise) reached Top 7 in the UK and Top 5 in R&B markets in the U.S.
- Taja launched Urban Farming in Detroit, Michigan in 2005 after seeing vast amounts of unused land within the city and learning about the hunger and food insecurity. Within 4 ½ years, the organization had installed hundreds of gardens around the United States, and some abroad. By 2010 Urban Farming had received over 30,000 media stories, creating a global trend in urban, suburban, and rural agriculture.
What We Do
- Urban Farming is non-profit 501c (3) and is non-partisan and non-denominational.
- We help move people beyond the cycle of continual need for emergency food assistance, so that they may become employed or self-employed, productive and innovative citizens. We provide the “fish” and most importantly, “the fishing pole.”
- Urban Farming helps people grow their own food, with a focus on organic growing:
- In our first 14 years, we installed hundreds of community gardens of free food around the United States and some abroad. The standard garden size was 20’ by 20’ with some of the gardens in Detroit spanning entire city blocks.
- In 2009 Urban Farming began the Urban Farming Free Plant Giveaways, which focus on equipping community members with plants and other garden resources to help them grow their own food. The Urban Farming Free Plant Giveaways encourage people to grow their own organic food and to eat healthy, nutritious food. Growing one’s own food helps to cut down on monthly bills.
- Urban Farming also conducts workshops on the Urban Farming Healthy Principles:
- Healthy Thinking
- Healthy Communication
- Healthy Eating
- Healthy Fitness
- Healthy Finances
- Healthy Education
- Healthy Families
- We are aligned with organic, non-GMO, pesticide and herbicide-free growing, utilizing a no-till approach and the use of diverse crops and plants.
- We teach students, adults, and families about the importance of the natural design of nature and the many lessons that can be learned from this Divine Design.
- The work of Urban Farming has created a global trend in urban agriculture, including the way that our world approaches food security and financial security. Urban Farming is a holistic global vision that sees a future in which good health, innovation, and productivity are an inherent part of our lifestyle. Urban Farming helps empower people who are unemployed, underemployed, laid off, malnourished, have unhealthy diets, suffer from hunger or food insecurity.
- We have found that the garden serves as a teaching tool for the importance of coexistence in our world. Some of the foundational components include:
- Business Growth
- Job Creation
- Urban and Rural Revitalization
- Organic Agriculture
- Health and Wellness (The Urban Farming Healthy Principles).
- Global Investment, including information about the global economy and emerging industries, and how these issues affect our daily lives.
- Between 2010 and 2025, over 60,000 people had added their gardens to the Urban Farming Global Map to become a part of the Urban Farming Global Food Chain®.
