2011 was another phenomenal year for high definition technology. Led by strong sales by both HD televisions and Blu-ray movies, the American consumer has long ago bought into the clear advantages of high-def entertainment.

Just how good of a year was 2011 for HD? Consider this: Blu-ray disc sales in the United States are expected to hit somewhere around 115 Million units after a final tally of 85 Million in 2010. A couple of key releases drove a majority of the growth – including the long-awaited release of the Star Wars films in the Blu-ray format. Star Wars: The Complete Saga, set Blu-ray sales records including a whopping $38 Million in sales the very first week.

Also setting the pace has been the sale of HD televisions – particularly flat-screen LCD sets. Like 2010, they’ll enjoy falling prices and will upgrade to larger screens and 3D will continue to grow slowly in the U.S. The numbers will continue to jump as Americans add multiple screens in their homes.
