Pawn

Shaxs dressed as a pawn

A pawn was a game piece in the game of chess. Metaphorically speaking, to be considered a pawn in the hands of another was to be used against one's will to achieve a desired outcome, similar to being considered a puppet.

When the computer of the USS Enterprise-D was affected by nanites, it responded to an inquiry with "pawn to king three, knight to rook four, queen to bishop three". (TNG: "Evolution")

When Q set a challenge for the bridge crew of the USS Cerritos in 2380 by placing them on a large chess board (with elements of several other games and sports), he made Jack Ransom and Shaxs into pawns. (LD: "Veritas")

Background information[]

In the writers' first draft script of ENT: "Dear Doctor", DoctorPhlox found a pawn in the stomach of CaptainArcher's petbeagle, Porthos, the dog having recently eaten the pawn as Archer had been playing chess. The pawn was causing the dog some gastrointestinal distress. However, in the final version of the episode, Porthos suffers from gastrointestinal distress caused, instead, by cheese.
