Occasionally, an article needs to be renamed. In these cases, you can follow this guideline to suggest and perform a proper renaming. For a list of unresolved rename suggestions, see Category:Memory Alpha pages to be renamed.
Anyone can suggest that a page be renamed, and anyone can perform the move itself, though it is important to update any incoming links to the new title.
- To suggest renaming an article, add the renaming notice template to the page that you think should be moved. For example, put {{rename to|NEW TITLE}} on top of the page to suggest that it should be renamed to "NEW TITLE". (If you are not sure what the new name should be, use template without a parameter, i.e. {{rename to}}.) This template will invite discussion about this suggestion on the talk page. As a courtesy, put either "move suggested" or "rename suggestion" in the edit summary, to additionally make other users aware of this.
- Explain on the talk page the reason(s) you think the page should be moved under a heading with the title "Rename", or something similar.
- If, after seven to ten days, there's consensus, the article can be renamed by moving the article to the new title. See rename a page for more information, and remember to update any incoming links after a move.
Note that renaming your own newly-created page due to a typo does not require discussion.
